How to Maintain Your Furnace
It is important to perform maintenance on your furnace. There are also safety concerns with furnaces as well, because furnaces that are malfunctioning could start to produce carbon monoxide, and this is a potentially lethal gas. And since furnaces are normally installed in out-of-the way portions of the house, they are not something that people normally think much about. One way to approach furnace maintenance is to have a service technician come before the start of every winter. It is possible, however, to perform adequate maintenance yourself and save the cost of a few service calls. Here are the main things you will need to do.
The first and most obvious thing to do is to replace your air filter. If you have the kind of air filter that can be cleaned and reused, then do that. If you use a hose to clean the filter make sure it is thoroughly dry before you replace it.
Have a look at the fan belts. If you put pressure in the middle of a fan belt there should be about a one inch deflection. Any worn out fan belts need to be replaced immediately. You can try this yourself of have a service technician perform the task.
The pilot light needs to be relit if it has been extinguished. This is rare, but it is possible. Unless you have experience lighting pilot lights you might want to leave this to a technician. Lighting matches next to open gas lines is a recipe for anxiety.
Make sure the fan turns easily. If it makes noises and seems to be binding against something, it is once again time to call an experienced technician to fix it.
Lubricate the fan motor shaft. Most shafts have ports to add lubricant on the ends, so use a high quality light motor oil and put some into the port. Don’t spray lubricant into the fan area. This will only attract dust and the smell of the spray will be sent all over the house.
It is also a good idea to vacuum around the furnace while you are doing the above maintenance steps, since your furnace is probably in a location that doesn’t get much regular cleaning. If the above tasks seem a bit much for the normal layman to do, you might want to opt for a service technician once a year. This will typically cost about a hundred dollars or a bit more.
